So, this is going to be one of my shorter posts of the season because I was only on the farm for a whole 1.5 days last week!! It was the most time I’ve taken off in a row in season since I got married. It was a much needed break with the family and I found out my 20 month old is a total beach baby!
The most exciting thing that happened while I was away was that the driveway entrance was redone. There still needs to be a little work done right at the end but no more getting seasick or bottoming out as you come in.
The crops are plugging away. Today we took one of the row covers of some of our beds to cool them off. The crops that were under there are very happy and in no time they will be ready to be enjoyed.
This week’s share is on the verge of screaming summer. The zucchini and summer squash are really beginning to take off. There are going to be these beautiful striped zucchinis in the share this week (hence, the picture above), along with other zukes/summer squash, cucumbers, lots more tomatoes, rainbow chard, salad mix, sweet onions, cabbage, basil and the very last of the broccoli until the fall. There is also going to be basil that is available for u-pick near the barn if you’re ready to make a bunch of pesto. Oh, and remember when there were garlic scapes for days? Well, our friends over at Crooked Carrot Farm and Kitchen pickled a bunch for us and now they are ready for you to enjoy. On the horizon are beans, eggplant and parsley.
It looks like it’s going to be fairly warm for most of the week with some rain showers sprinkled in. When it’s this hot, I try and limit how much warmer the kitchen gets. So, it’s all about the grill. The zucchini is a perfect size to be halved brushed with olive oil and a little salt and pepper. The sweet onions go great on the grill too!
