Vote now for a Seeds of Change grant to transform the courtyard area in the by the dining hall in the Main Building at TC3 into a food garden
As part of the Sustainable Farming and Food Systems Program, our students are asked to do a capstone project. You can see past capstone projects here. This semester, three students have elected to work together to start a Garden Club on campus, and to work on transforming the courtyard areas in the main building into places for growing food. Our students are working with the Campus Nutrition and Wellness Council to come up with a design for these areas, to clean them up, and to develop them as a space to grow food for the campus community and the Cafeteria.
They have also submitted a grant application to Seeds of Change, an organization that funds a number of community garden projects across the country.

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?
Tompkins Cortland Community College Foundation’s goal is to turn the courtyard space on campus into an edible garden. This garden will be used to educate the TC3 community about sustainable growing practices, beautify campus, and create a local, fresh, healthy, and affordable food source for the campus. We are currently contacting community members and local businesses for donations of materials. So far, we’ve confirmed a donation from Cayuga Compost, a local business that transforms food scraps into beautiful living soil. This will educate the community about closed-loop soil systems that mimic natural processes. We still need lumber, screws, seeds plants, a watering system, wheelbarrows, tables and chairs. Community members are working together at TC3 to bring life to this edible garden project. TC3 is located where several factors contribute to limited quality food options. An edible, interactive garden would greatly benefit our campus educationally, socially, and environmentally.
