  • The Proposed Cayuga Lake TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load)
    With staff from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

    Come listen, learn what’s proposed, provide information about water-protecting farming practices already in place in the region, and ask questions.
  • Large-Scale Solar: What Landowners Need to Know to Protect Themselves
    With Chris Denton, Attorney
    Rural landowners throughout the region are being approached by landsmen offering lease for land for potential solar installations. Learn about the dangers and pitfalls of these agreements, and what to consider.
  • Community Scale Solar & Using Sheep to Control Ground Cover Growth
    With staff from the Renovus Solar and sheep farmer Caleb Scott
  • Changes in the CRP to Include Pastureland
    With Erin Madden, Farm Service Agency
    CRP now includes a grassland program. If you are grazing animals and interested in rotational grazing, come learn about this program. If selected to participate, there could be cost share fencing and water systems assistance.

Fee: $10 per person. Includes Lunch.

Call for workshop and presentation ideas!

Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming is pleased to announce “The Farm to Plate Conference: Uniting to Create, Educate, and Celebrate a Sustainable Local Food System” which will take place on May 11-13, 2017 in Ithaca, NY and the surrounding areas.

The conference is a collaborative effort by Groundswell Center, Food, Agroecology, Justice and Well-being Collective at Cornell, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Crooked Carrot, Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute, Roots Rising Farm, the Tompkins County Food Policy Council and the Youth Farm Project.

Agroforestry Trainings for Military Veterans

The Cornell Small Farms Program is offering three two-day Agroforestry Trainings for Military Veterans in 2017. Agroforestry includes farming practices that combine trees and forestry with crop production. Three workshops will convene to focus on the most viable tree-crop enterprises including maple syrup, log-grown shiitake mushrooms, and silvopasture (combining livestock with trees).

Each training includes classroom instruction and site visits to farms in active production.

Content will cover the technical aspects of production as well as the financial and business considerations for each venture.

A Capstone Project for the TC3 Sustainable Farming and Food Systems

This veteran-focused workshop will cover everything you need to know about the preparation and planting of a fall vegetable garden. Whether growing food for the family or preparing to sell for a Fall Market or farmstand, home gardens are a great way to provide for you and your family. The workshop will guide beginning homesteaders and gardeners through the process of choosing the best crops for fall production, preparing the garden, and proper growing techniques. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about: site assessment and bed preparation, direct seeding and transplanting, organic pest and weed control, mulching, and more. The workshop includes a free lunch at the Legion. Come join your fellow veterans to learn about growing, share ideas, and help grow a strong network of Veteran Growers.
