Ithaca Farmer’s Market opens up for the 2017 season on April 1st, from 9 AM- 3 PM! Sunday Farmer’s Market kicks off on the 7th. Come down to greet returning  and new chefs, farmers, artisans.

Upcoming Cured Meats Workshop at Cornell University

Cured Meats WorkshopTuesday and Wednesday March 14-15, 2017 at 8:30am to 4:30pm at Cornell University

Register Now for the upcoming seminar – to be held March 14 and 15, 2017 at Cornell University.

The Cured Meats Workshop is tailored to small-scale meat processors and restaurant owners interested in creating a value-added meat product for their customers.

The course consists of lecture sessions that will cover basic charcuterie, meat fabrication, casings, grinding, as well as an overview of HACCP, scheduled processes, and testing. Participants will also learn through on-hands sessions the basics of cured meats production in coppa, pancetta, speck and others. A full agenda for the event can be found here (PDF).

The cured meats workshop is ideally suited for small-scale meat processors and restaurant owners.

Organic Hemp Focus of Winter Meeting

2017 New York Certified Organic winter meeting: Organic hemp, alternative forage

The last of the 2017 New York Certified Organic winter meetings on Monday, March 13 in Geneva, NY, will include an update on organic hemp production trials plus presentations on nutrient balancing, crop production, and alternative forage production for organic farming systems. Presenters include Cornell University and University of Vermont faculty and a New York organic dairy farmer.

The meeting will start promptly at 10 am in Jordan Hall at 630 West North Street at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva. There is no cost or need to register to attend the NYCO meetings; participants are asked to bring a dish for potluck lunch. The Monday date is a break with the traditional Tuesday meetings.

Scholarships for Students Studying Agriculture in New YorkThe application is now available for the Paul and Maria Morra Scholarship Trust which is administered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia and Greene Counties. All Columbia and Greene County, NY residents are eligible to apply. The purpose of this scholarship trust is to honor the lives of Paul and Maria Morra (trust benefactors) and their commitment to preserving the natural resources of our region. Applicants must be pursuing further education in the field of horticulture, agriculture, forestry or natural resources.

Complete application packet must be received by April 1, 2017. Scholarship selection is not based solely on academic standing but greater emphasis is placed on the interest and motivation of the student to excel in their chosen field of study. Applicants should ensure their application packet responds very directly to the goals of the benefactors.

develop a farm business planDuring this five part series hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County and led by Laura Biasillo, Agricultural Economic Development Specialist, participants will work through the various sections of a business plan for their agricultural venture. This is applicable whether you are considering a food-based business, growing fruits or vegetables, raising livestock or starting an agri-tourism based operation. Using a set of templates created by the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture as well as the NYS Small Business Development Center, sample worksheets will lend a practical perspective and illustrate how real farm families set goals, research processing alternatives, determine potential markets, and evaluated financing options. Blank worksheets will help participants to develop a detailed, lender-ready business plan or map out strategies to take advantage of new opportunities.
