Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 4-H program will offer a Tractor and Machinery Safety Training program for youth ages 14-15.

This training program will enable young workers to obtain Hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture (HOOA) certification, which is required to operate farm tractors and equipment. The program will provide attendees with the necessary 24 hours of instruction, and it will include group discussions, demonstrations, field trips, hands-on activities, independent study, and field assignments.
Upon completion of instruction, a written exam and driving test will be offered to achieve certification. The program is available to anyone 12 years of age and older, however only individuals 14 and older will be able to operate equipment and become certified. Individuals age 16 and over are encouraged to attend as well, although enrollment preference will be given to those ages 14-15.

Agroforestry Trainings for Military Veterans

The Cornell Small Farms Program is offering three two-day Agroforestry Trainings for Military Veterans in 2017. Agroforestry includes farming practices that combine trees and forestry with crop production. Three workshops will convene to focus on the most viable tree-crop enterprises including maple syrup, log-grown shiitake mushrooms, and silvopasture (combining livestock with trees).

Each training includes classroom instruction and site visits to farms in active production.

Content will cover the technical aspects of production as well as the financial and business considerations for each venture.
